This month’s Tangents theme is all about Ecology, an important consideration in design. It’s essential because buildings and urban spaces have a major impact on the environment, resource use, and human well-being. An ecological approach seeks to reduce energy consumption, minimize waste, conserve water, and protect natural ecosystems by working with the local climate, materials, and landscapes rather than against them. It also creates healthier, more resilient spaces through better air quality, natural lighting, and sustainable construction methods. By integrating ecological principles, architects and designers can help address climate change while creating places that are both functional and responsible for future generations.

Ivan started us off with an education about the successes of the re-introduction of wolves in Yellowstone in 1995.

Tommy took us on a humorous journey about the impact of Pablo Escobar’s hippos in Colombia and how foreign critters, such as feral cats, are taking over Australia.

Haneen showed us the decades-long ecological destruction of Olive Trees in Palestine and how one family (among many) is struggling to access a popular ingredient in an indigenous culinary mixture called Zaatar.
