tangents ‘25 | June

June’s topic was a bit more personal to the DBRDS team. We explored our individual histories with the City of San Diego; what drew us to the city, our favorite spaces, and individual explorations.

For instance, Craig brought out the very first photos he took when he moved to San Diego in 2007. Not knowing much about the city or the history, he spent a couple of weeks before he started taking college classes driving around the city, exploring downtown hotels, the Salk Institute, and buildings around the UCSD campus. It was interesting to see just how much of the San Diego skyline has evolved in less than 20 years. He ended his presentation talking about his favorite building in La Jolla, the Neuroscience Institute, designed by Tod Williams and Billie Tsien in 1995.

Haneen gave us a tour of San Diego as a place of home, her connection to friends and family. Coming from Chicago, San Diego was life-changing with sprawling beaches, parks, and Hispanic culture. Being able to show off the city to her family was a point of pride and she got to create memories with her nieces and nephews that will last a lifetime.

Tommy ended the month by talking about his journey from Delano and the greater Bakersfield area to San Diego. He showed us the difference in architectural styles and of scale between San Diego and these smaller communities. He felt that the colors and the built history of our city is what really stands out to people who visit San Diego for the first time. He walked us through why the Salk Institute and Central Library stand out to him as architectural marvels.
