This month’s Tangents theme explored Nomad. It’s not simply as a lifestyle defined by movement, but as a way of thinking about home, permanence, and belonging. We began with Craig’s presentation of 13 Square Meters, a short documentary examining temporary housing for refugees in Berlin. The film looks at the “Tempohomes” created to accommodate people displaced from their homes, while also exploring the tension between architecture designed to provide shelter and the ways residents transform those spaces to make them their own.
Ivan followed by looking at a very different form of nomadic living through several films about life on the road and in remote parts of Australia. His presentation included a house by Australian architect Glenn Murcutt, whose work is deeply responsive to climate, landscape, and the particular conditions of place. Rather than imposing a building onto its surroundings, Murcutt's architecture often works with the landscape and is carefully attuned to its environment. Ivan's examples considered movement as a deliberate choice and a way of engaging more closely with landscape.
Pauly closed out the month with Post-Capitalist Architecture TV: Part 3 — On Decolonization and Architecture, created by Sámi architect and artist Joar Nango and Sámi filmmaker Ken Are Bongo. The film explores questions of Indigenous identity, architecture, and decolonization, examining how Sámi culture and architecture have historically been represented and understood. The larger series was filmed from a mobile studio traveling through the northern landscape, itself becoming a kind of nomadic architectural practice.
